Another Orchid Question.?
Question:I've just bought an orchid and for a few days it has had six flowers with 12 or more bulbs that haven't even oppend up, will they ever bloom? and the stems are really tall, after it losses its flowers can I cut the stem down to the leaves?
Answers:
Find the variety, as they like different amounts of light.
In general, bright but indirect light, and elevate it in a dish of water, so the pot is dry, but it has lots of humidty. Soak the pot weekly, every other week with orchid food. YES they will open. Use a spray bottle to mist it at least every other day. If they dry out and fall off, mine then are finished for the season.
When proper light and moisture maintained, I have had blooms stay for an unbelievable 6 months.
Yes, you can cut the stem back completely when it dies back. While its green, just cut it back half way. It may bloom again.
the question is do you know that orchids are a fungus?? and they wont Bloom off the same stem when it dies.the blooms some times last for a year..make sure they are some where air really circulates, they love moving air...
Okay.it depends on what type of orchid you have...catalleya orchids take the longest to flower. It normally does take a few days for all orchid flowers to open.
Bulbs? Hm.those aren't the flowers themselves (or are they? Im confused some) but normally when someone says bulbs around here,it means the plant itself. Those take a while, and you have to take special care of them.
As for the flowers...yes,its normal to wait a while for them to open. After it opens,it stays for a while,(it depends on the type of orchid) but they usually last a few weeks. When the flowers fall off,or just gets yellow and wilts, you can cut off the stem they were on,that's fine.
