Answers:
I think the best method of filtration is the biological filters but they do take a while to establish. I use two but recently bought AlgaeFix from watergarden.com to clear up my pond after cleaning it out this spring ,same thing green water algae. I was concerned about my cats drinking out of the pond but the answer that I received when I emailed them, said it was safe at the recommended dose. I keep the cats out anyway. It has cleared the water and is safe for fish and the frog that lives there shows no ill effects. Your best bet also is to have a good balance of plants and good bacteria. Go to watergarde.com and read about AlgaeFix...they have answers to all your questions.
Add more plants!! Both plants that cover the surface of the water and submergent plants, These will use up the excess nitrogen in your water and will help considerably to get rid of the green water.
i would seek the advice from a local landscape expert. they can tell you exactly what you need. i know my mom has certain types of plants that will kill the algae in her goldfish pond. the algae is what is turning your pond green. good luck and i hope this helps.
check your local aquarium for the best variety of algae - eating fish. some species of catfish fit the bill. i urge you to ask a professional before deciding what type because you haven't mentioned water temperature or size of your pond.
The pet stores sell a chemical that will not hurt the pond critters, but will rid it of the algae.
You didn't say if you have a filter or not. If you do and are still having algae problems, get a UV filter to take care of the algae, it will be gone in a couple of days.
