What are those spiky green/brown balls that fall off some trees?

Question:and what are the trees called?

Answers:
Horse Chestnuts

Monkeyballs.but I don't know the name of the tree.
These are chestnut trees. Squirrels love 'em.
conkers-horse chestnuts-maybe
Sweet Gum Tree is my guess.
chestnuts roasting on an open fire ! chestnut tree.
Plane tree [American sycamore] would be a good choice. The spiky balls are basically seed-pods for the next generation. Look in Wikipedia--search 'plane tree' and see if the description of the tree matches.
They are seed pods from the American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), also known as "Redgum." <1> Once the seed pods are sufficently dry, they crack open, releasing their seeds. (See link for picture)
I believe they are "Gum" trees. I have them also, and MAN oh MAN, if you step on one barefoot!! Hurts!
They are called Sweet Gum Trees. I have 4 in my yard and I hate them. You can't walk barefooted in the yard, and when you cut grass, you don't want to be in the line of fire when one is shot out of the lawn mower. It HURTS!!
