How can I clean up and maintain the fence line?
Question:I have thick tree like weed, general weeds to grass grown along the both wood privacy fence and chainlink fence. I tried weedeater, Round Up, but it did not work as I wanted. I go to a park near by and noticed all the chainlink fence line has nothing growing but sand (here in Florida). The rest is nice green grass. How do I get started to make my yard look like that? I have about 1 acre of property space, and all fenced cross fenced.

Sometimes roundup isn't enough when you have a more woody type of weeds growing. Try Brush Kleen (I think that is what it is called) by Ortho. If they are very thick you may need to paint it on the stems or "trunks" but it will kill them. Then all you have to do is spray once a month and it will keep them out. The only real alternative is to dig it all up with a shovel and remove all the roots first and then spray. I have a similar problem and I live in the country with a wood fence on my side and a woven wire fence on the other. With a 6 inch space between the fences it was the only thing that worked.
I use a total vegitation killer on my fence rows, applied one a year. Feed and grain or a good hardware should be able to supply it,i use a regular orchard sprayer for application ,making sure i git good coverage..George
The park is probably using a weed and brush killer like Tordon or the equivalent. Clean the fence row using mechanical means (brush cutter, clippers, chain saw), whatever works to clear the growth. Spray the cut stems and stumps with an approved chemical agent. Check with your local extension office for recommended products. One application is usually residual for one year.
My personal method is to lay a commercial weed barrier fabric (available at the local garden store or on-line) and cover with a thick mulch of your choice. This is a long lasting "cure" that requires no chemical application. Much friendlier to the environment and has no possibility of killing desirable plantings.
You could dig a small trench along the fence line.nothing major like a moat or anything. Then place some cedar mulch along the fence line. This should keep the weeds down enough so you can manage them. If you are opposed to constantly weed-whacking them, then this would be another alternative. I have seen where people have even dug a small trench and laid red brick end-to-end along the fence line.
