I have 1 holly bush. How do you know to buy a male or female to get berries to grow.?

Question:

Answers:
Yes, you need a male to pollinate the female bushes, or they won't make the pretty red berries.

You only need one male to about 8 female bushes. And the male doesn't have to be right in them - it can be across the yard from them. As long as the bees visit both bushes in the same trip, the females will get pollinated.

And for the previous answerer:

Oh, please. about 30% of popular garden plants are "poisonous to people and animals". Including Morning Glories, Foxglove, and a zillion other things including those taxus/yew bushes that are in 80% of american foundation plantings.

Just don't eat your holly. Or your foundation plantings.

Holly bushes come in male and female..I thought bees germinated them
Holly berries are poisonous to people and animals, are you sure you want to grow them?

Addition to CAT below my answer: I only say this because berries are hard for children to resist. Never a good idea if there are small children that would have access to them. I do like your answer though and gave you a thumbs up!
I agree with cat on this,If you have ever been to a garden center or work their like I do,you will find out public that there
are very few plants and shrubs that aren't posion.Even your house plants so many of them are posion, check into it and see for yourself.
you really have to teach your children like I did mine, and my grand children, that they should never stick foregin things in there mouth, kids are smarter than most give them credit for.
But the answer to the question, you do need one with and without berries,This time of year the female berries are very small and will continue to grow to winter and turn red.you do need both though and the garden center can help you even if you choose not to buy the bush there.garden center advice.
good luck
