Galium Odaratum - Help please!?
Question:I recently received some woodruff plants from a flower farm. I need them for a mead recipe I want to try. The recipe calls for sprigs of woodruff, and I am not sure at what stage these should be pruned or how to dry the herbs. If anyone is skilled in herbology I would greatly appreciate your input, as I have only begun my apothecary studies.
Thank you!
Answers:
Sweet woodruff is usual gathered in May hence the popular beverage Maywine. They are harvested when they start to flower. (Little white flowers). A good rule of thumb is to harvest no more than 1/3 of the flowering tops if you want to keep the plant...otherwise if you just want to use it for Mead than harvest abundantly. When making Mead you normally want to use fresh(!) herbs. You can dry by hanging bundles of no more than 10 sprigs upside down in a dry space.
