What is a good frequency and time to water lawn?
Question:Q. 1) I have a variety fescue grass and am watering it 4 times a week every four hours for 5 minutes ( 6am, 10am, 2pm, & 6pm). I was watering it for 4 times a week once for 25 minutes.
Q. 2) Which are better, the gear driven sprinkler heads or stationary (popup variety)?
Answers:
First of all, it doesn't do much good to water it every four hours. You are encouraged the roots to stay shallow, rather than to reach down into more moist soil below. Watering once a week for 1/2 hour or so is much better for the grass.
Water in the morning. It avoids sunscald and dries the blades quicker - reducing the chance of mold and disease.
Popup buried sprinkler systems work the best.
I would quit watering it during the day. A landscaper recently told me he avoids watering during the day because the water evaporates during the heat.
We water in the evening or early morning. Personally I think night is better, it has a chance to soak into the ground before the sun can hit it.
We use a soaker hose, or a revolving sprinkler on our trees and lawn.
Water once a week early in the morning. 1 inch (depending on where you live) is usually enough. Don't water in the evening, it causes mildew and other problems.
Its best to water at night that way the sun doesn't dry up the water.
If you water in the afternoon, the sun will fry the grass &water.
I learned this the hard way :(
