Gerbera Daisies?

Question:I live in Zone 8, WA state, and I was wondering when to plant these bulbs? I am just now wanting to plant them in the beginning of June, but not sure if this is correct? Should I wait til next year? Any info?

Answers:
Your climate should allow you to plant them now. Gerbera daisies are very sensitive to heat... temperatures above 70 degrees seems to take a toll on them...where the stems will begin to wilt slightly.

Here are a couple of tips I can offer you;

Since Gerberas are very susceptible to root-rots, plant them on a slight mound of sterile planting mix. This will prevent the crowns from sitting in water and allow the area around it to dry out faster.

If possible, use a drip system/soaker hose. Overhead watering promotes diseases. Keep soil moist throughout the summer.

During summer months, place your plants where afternoon exposure to the sun is minimized.preferably filtered or partial sun is best. In the fall, winter and spring...full sun is okay.

Gerberas love fertilizer..fertilize every other week with a soluble fertilizer AND apply a slow release fertilizer (I prefer using Osmocote 14-14-14 and apply it every three months).
