There's a tree in my front yard - it has dark red leaves, and produces fruit that looks like big cherries, but

Question:it tastes a bit like a plum - it does have a pit. We ate a couple and did not die. - ANY IDEAS?

Answers:
probably an ornamental plum. My parents used to have these and the fruit was edible.. although in sufficient quantities, it could have a laxative affect...

sounds like a small plum. did the fruit stick to the seed? is the seed kind of rough?
Does it have pink flowers? It could be a crabapple tree. You can make jelly from the fruit. There are various types, and some bear fruit while others are purely ornamental. Here is a search below with Yahoo Images.
it is most likely a crab apple tree!
Ornimental plum is what it probably is
To me, this tree sounds like a crab apple of the genus Malus.
There are about 30 species of these apples, including those grown in orchards that we buy from the grocery store. They are also known as "wild apples." Bees are very attracted to the small white or pink flowers.

Also, our crab apple tree had a problem with japanese beetles eating most of the leaves off of the tree. They would also eat the fruit after it ripened.

I hope this helps!
Might be a crab apple? Give some to the neighbor kids, see if they die.
