Sounds like they are ripening too fast and not getting enough water. This usually happens in August (hot and dry). You might try watering the plants early morning and see if that solves problem. Try not to get water on leaves as that may cause a disease called "wilt".

sounds like too much water. the bumpiness is not real unusual, but obviously the hollowness is. I suggest putting a board under the fruit as it grows, so it does not sit in the mud. You may have a slug problem as well, sprinkle some slug bait or put down deadline to keep the slugs away.

At a farm and garden store you can get a moisture sensor that will tell you if you need to water. Sometimes the top of the soil can be completely dry, and underneath, no water is needed. If you use the sensor, you will know when to water, and you will probably save money on water as well.
