Why have my courgettes gone bulbous at one end, instead of long & thin?

Question:

Answers:
Are they all like that, or only one? I pick off the odd one that tries to be a butternut. They have prematurely developed seeds and will never reach a good size. Picking off when young, they can still be enjoyed, and the plant is stimulated into growing some more (hopefully) long courgettes.

Talk to someone local. You can look at http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have someone local.
Perhaps you havent watered them on a regular basis.
Some varieties do have a bulbous end, this is a good thing... all the seeds are in the bulb bit, which means the long bit is meatier and therefore tastier. Enjoy your rude courgettes :D
