Why is there grass growing underneath my birdfeeder?
Question:There are thick, bright green blades of grass growing out of the birdseed I bought at Kmart. It was super cheap, 10 bucks for 3 20 pound bags...
What is going on here? Do birds eat grass seed?
Answers:
yes, birds eat all types of seeds. There are many kinds of seeds in bird seed. I've seen a Sunflower grow from a pile of bird seed.
That is all the seed the birds have dropped.
Sounds like a questionable bag of bird seed-plus the birds' doodie is fertilizing it!
Some of the seed in your bird feeder may be grass seed. Birds are messy eaters, they scatter some of the seed they poke away at in the feeder. Some of the seeds might go through their digestive system unaffected. Finally, the little birdies are going to be pooping while they're eating, so they add fertilizer and moisture to the soil under the feeder.
It's probably not grass, but another seed plant that simply looks like it. A lot of them don't look that different until the plant matures some, at least not to the casual observer.
