Blueberry Bush Care?
Question:We have 6 blueberry bush (they stand 5feet tall) - we recently moved into this house and dont know how to care for them. We have heard we need alumina sulphate and petemoss. Is this right? If so, am I too late to do this at the end of May? The bushes are blooming (leaves)already? We have just covered them in netting so the birds dont get at them. Also, do you mix the sulphate and the pete moss into what already exists? Thanks for any help - we live in southern ontario.
Answers:
It is true that blueberries like soil rich in organic matter, such as peatmoss or compost and also prefer acidic soil. I would first check to see what is already there. You may not need anything but a small amout of fertilizer if you so desire. My patch of berries are 11 years old and do very well with very little help from me. I started with decent soil, keep them mulched with stuff that worms like to keep soil rich and fertile and keep the weeds down and they keep me in more berries than i can use most years.
Yes mend it into the soil. The reasoning is for acidic soil that they love. Give them a bit of light fertilizer also, growth starter type to keep them vibrant. These bushes can die off although at 5-6 feet tall you have yourself some great plants.
