When is the best time to prune roses and what is the best way to do it?

Question:I live in Australia in Victoria.

Answers:
Just before winter so soon and you should cut them back quite harshly and give them some shape.

If you can pull up Martha Stewart on your computer, she has a good video in her archives, but I don't know how to tell you to do it.
If you prune them in the fall you want to go about 2 inches from the ground, but make sure if it gets cold there (not sure the temp in Australia) that you cover them throughout the winter mths. You can also wait until early spring and I usually cut them back about 4-6 inches.
