It really depends on the type of tree, but here are some general guidelines. Don't prune a tree when it is really hot outside. It really stresses the tree. Most deciduous trees can be pruned when they are dormant. Late Fall is a great time to prune trees. If the tree is a blooming tree, you can prune it either right after it blooms, or in the fall. You can prune yews and other evergreens early in the spring before they candle out.

If you want to prune your trees this year, wait until it cools off for best results.
