Growing veg, when to harvist?
Question:I have some carrots and turnips growing at the moment in deep troths(since about march/april time) and have seperated them out like the packet said. they are still small at the moment but the seed packet justs says harvist march - september which isnt much help.
so if any one can tell me generaly how big the leaves should get befor i can harvest them.
or any other tips as to when they should be ready as i am new to growing veg.
Answers:
You can use the guidelines on the seed packet for a rough estimation of the harvest date. As the vegetables get larger, you will see the tops where the green leaves start becoming more visible. You can check them occasionally and use the ones that you pull up as baby vegetables and add them to your salads.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
i remember my dad growing these when i was a child, i think he would pull one up and check on its length to see if the crop was ready to harvest, if you can see the tops of the carrots or turnips its a good sign and ready to pull up
I look at the top of the carrot (first bit of orange under the soil) - I dig my finger around it to see how big it is, and when I am satisfied with the size I pull it up!
If you planted the white top purple bottom turnips, when they just bigger than a baseball is best. They'll get bigger but flavor is everything. I've never plantd them in pots or troughs just my garden, but the old farmer's rule of thimb is " Plant in July, wet or dry. Get'em in October, drunk or sober." Good Luck.
