Is it true that mulch in your garden bed can bring termites in ur house?
Question:is mulch a good choice or is little rocks or sand better? i need something cheap for a small area in front yard.
Answers:
Yes,Termites will eat any cellulose containing material, mulch, wood, paper,PINE STRAW,etc the termites do not necessarily live in the mulch you buy but are in the ground. It does not matter if the mulch is "certified"or not,the termites on on the property.Mold is NOT an issue...Just keep the area next to the house clear, line with rock etc.Eliminate conducive conditions"moisture,earth/wood contact"Have an inspection performed by a quality pest control company.Mold or any microbial growth in the home needs a moisture source also.
You may have problems if you keep a pile of mulch or plants too close to your foundation.
Whatever you to, start anything 6" - 8" away from it
No, mulch doesn't have termites. Termites don't live in exposed wood, they hide in wood such as within a house. Mulch is open to the elements, and safe.
You could use rocks or sand or mulch in that area depending on what is in that area. Are there plants? Then mulch it. Rocks are not beneficial for plants, but mulch is because it helps retain moisture and protects them from the elements.
If there's no plants in the area, then use rocks or something that would go with the general view.
molds are more of an issue. some houses (mostly in so. cal) have had mold invasions that were later attributed to the contaminated mulching in the garden. keep the mulch from actually touching your house, if you have this concern. termites shouldn't be a problem, tho.
Yes, mulch can carry termites. Buy certified mulch - this means it is chopped from clean sources of wood as opposed to potentially contaminated trash (like yard /wood debris from storm damaged areas).
Rocks are a unique look, but can be really expensive. I use pine straw, myself. It's cheap and easy to freshen up, will not be carrying termites, and easy to rake out and replace when it begins to build up.
