How do I get rid of snails and slugs in my garden?

Here's some easy environmentally friendly pesticides/deterrents you can make yourself. You can use more than one of these methods at the same time, such as a slug/snail repelling mulch, plus coffee/ coffee grounds.

1. Strong coffee! "A study in the journal Nature found that slugs and snails are killed when sprayed with a caffeine solution. (1) Another study found that "After 96 hours, all of the snails treated with a 0.5% or 2% caffeine solution were dead." (2) Use coffee grounds & your leftover coffee around the base of plants, on mulch & pathways.

2.Chile Pepper. Capsaicin, the natural "heat" of the chile pepper, makes snails unwilling to cross materials containing the naturally repelling properties of chile pepper." (3)

3. Galic spray is great for getting rid of slugs, cutworms, wireworms, & whiteflies. Blend well 1garlic bulb & 1 onion add 1Tbsp cayenne pepper & 1 quart water. Steep ingredients for 1 hr, then strain & add 1 Tbsp dish soap and your non-toxic spray is ready to use. (4)(6)

4.Repellent mulches: Wormwood, prostrate rosemary, basil, rue, acacia bark, and oak leaves are disliked by snails and make good repellent mulches. Wormwood is also effective as a spray.

5. Barriers: Dry, dusty or sharp material can be a barrier to snails, such as hydrated lime, wood ash, sharp sand, crushed egg shells, or diatamaceous earth. "A band 20cms wide and 1 cm high is required. The effectiveness of barriers is reduced when wet so locate them away from watering points. Snail fences may also be made from galvanised metal, window screen wire and similar materials. 30 mesh copper screens can ... prevent climbing, or use steel wool. (5)

6.Traps: Place board on ground & scrape off snails when they gather on the underside, &/or place shallow containers sunk into the ground and filled with beer or other fermenting substances such as sour milk, or even "a mixture of water and bakers yeast." (5) Combining both methods by covering part of the container with a board should prevent pets & other creatures from drinking it .

Onion & Marigold plants repell slugs & snails, too.

Hope this helps & you like reading the research articles as much as I did.

Kill them with salt.
use pesticide duh!
Bake them.
Salt should do it.
the organic way to get rid of slugs.
fill a shallow container with beer.
slugs are attracted to it..drown in it & that gets rid of them.
Sprinkle Salt on them
Grow salt crystals.JP
I think that is a question alot of people would like to have answered. Some flowers keep them away, but just around those certain flowers. Every chemical I have ever used have damaged the plants!
they are good for garden
This is easy-Corry's snail and slug powder. Buy it at Home Depot. They'll be gone in a jiffy!
go to Home Depot and get Snail stopper and spread it around your garden. Ask the sales associate they may able to give you the exact name.
you should sprinkle salt around your garden.
put salt on them!
hi laura, great name since that is mine too...lol anyway, my granny use to use salt. good luck :)
Put out litltle shallow saucers of beer at night. You'll have floaters in the morning.
Try little shallow dishes of beer. They are attracted to it, crawl in, and drown. More effective than pesticides or standing guard with a salt shaker! Hope this helps.
Peanut Butter! They like it and when they eat it, there mouth gets stuck together, they stop eating and nomore snails and slugs. Trust me. I knew somebody who did that and it worked like a charm. Also a bowl of beer will work.
I'm not sure, because im not a gardener, but i know of a website that shows you how to maintain a PERFECT garden.

you can go out side at night when there out and pore salt on them or you can put salt at the edges and this will get rid of them .It is kind of grouse though they melt when in contact with saalt
A shallow dish filled with beer.
The best thing to do is lay sandpaper around your garden becuase the snails and slugs will not be able to crawl across this it is too painful for them.If you place it all around your garden it will be impossible for them to get to the garden.you could also try these
You could also Use the lint from your dryer as a barrier around your seedlings and plants.
Cedar, oak bark chips or gravel chips will irritate and dehydrates them.
Try a barrier line of powdered ginger.
Use wood ashes as a barrier, but try not to let the plant come into contact with the ashes.
Beer works great but other animals also like it so I make slug traps that won't attract things like raccoons.

Any empty 20oz soda bottle will do as long as its plastic. Throw away the cap you wont need it. Cut the top off the bottle right below the neck just above where the bottle becomes it's largest. Fill the bottle about half way with thecheapest beer you can find. Now turn the top of the bottle over and put it in the bottle. If you cut it right the top will stick down in the bottle but it will catch at the top and not fall. Now tape the bottle together so the top isn't wiggley. You have made a trap that slugs and snails can enter but can not escape. Bury the bottle about half way in the ground under the plants that attract the snails or slugs (Hostas are especially bad). In the morning you will have a bottle full of drowned slugs/snails. Voila!
Be careful when putting salt on them. Some plants may die if you put salt close to the plant. You can also go out at night with a flashlight and hunt them. Usualy they are very active by then. Bring a plastic bag with you and wear a glove. Pick them up and put them in the bag and put in your outside garbage. This will get rid of most of them. Then sprinkle some slug stuff out. If you do it this way you won't have as many dead bodies laying around.
i have just recently read an article on this. don't laugh but it said to take some clean empty tuna cans and sink them into the ground level and in the evening fill 2/3 with beer and by morning these creatures are to be in the cans ready for disposal
