Possible to grow healthy Rose plants in SW Florida outdoors?
Question:Possible to grow healthy Rose plants in SW Florida? .. Or would the high winds or constant insects just be too much for them? (If they were planted outdoors next to the house.)
Answers:
It is possible to grow at least moderately healthy rose bushes in South Florida. I live in Miami and I don't have a problem growing roses next to the house. They've gone through quite a few hurricanes (through two, I tied up and put a tarp over some of my plants to protect them from the high winds). After being devastated by unexpected storms, they usually grow back. Most insects don't go after rose bushes (at least not here).
The most important factors in growing roses is actually sunlight and soil acidity. I find that roses grow best if they have plenty of full sunlight and are planted in slightly acidic soil. I have roses planted all around my house. The rose bushes that are in the shadow of the house or the shade of trees are puny in comparison to the ones that get a lot of sun. Rose bushes also need room, so don't plant them too close together.
Hope this helps! =)
The wind isn't that big of a problem. Plant them beside a wall to act as a windbreak. (Wall can't block the sun more than a couple of hours a day)
Insects can be controlled with sprays.
That leaves you with providing the correct soil conditions and then watering them appropriately.
Give them plenty of sun shine, and spray them with soapy water to discourage insects. ( They don't like to eat soap)
I live in St. Petersburg and one of my in-laws neighbors has their entire front yard covered in rose bushes. so i guess the answer is yes.
Sure you can grow roses. They were once thought of as a weed but now we have beautified them and the hybrids are not as tough but will still grow. They need sun and lots of it and use a systemic rose specific plant food and that will feed and cut down on insects. If you are in really high winds you can just grow the ground cover ones or Florabunda roses do well on terraces and fences.
Water often and put the fertalizer on as directed (Ortho is GREAT).
Good luck with the roses.
rose will grow ok in Fla
I think they will love it. I would put a little garden fence around the first 12" of bush to prevent the high winds from snaping the branches low where they are woody .The softer bud shoots will sway with the wind. Bugs are part of the world and they will run their course and go. What you do then is water deeply and feed the ster manure( well composted )put a inch or two around the base of bush. This will insure the bush will stay strong enough to endure bug festation and flower beautifully.
