Is there a way to get rid of cattails without poison or heavy equipment?
Question:my home is on a lake and there are a bunch of cattails close to our house on the lake we have pulled them up and they grew back twice as thick,we burnt them down and again they grew back quickly and also spread again.they are taking over our property,and not to mention water moccasins have a great home there.since they are in the lake as well as our land we don't want to use poison,and heavy equipment won't fit as this is close to the house,anything that will fit back there will get stuck quickly.

"I can suggest something that's organic (however isn't probably desirable if you want to put other plants there). Mallard ducks are very happy to eat young cattails (well actually up till about 4 ft tall) both the tender white stalks and the roots also. With my 3 mallards, I cleaned out a pond some years back. It did take about 2-3 years to get all the cattails killed out to the point where they didn't reoccur next spring."

I had the same question a yr. ago and found at least in the the NE its illegal to remove them without jumping through paper hoops. If you haven't looked into it you may want do that first.
look in the phone book for 4h offices local kids that have goats or lambs you can have a kid come over with there pet project and eat the icky little things.. i have a lot of land so i go to the sales auction and pick up lambs let them eat the weeds than resell them back when the weeds are gone i make money because the lambs are fat and they sell buy the head or pound. no weeds no pulling i like the animals and it's easy for them to yummy down on the weeds
It may be illegal. That area would likely be consisdered a wetlands and, even on private property, it could be a legal nightmare.
