i got my allotment in march - underestimated just how much work it is - but have just had for tea home grown courgettes, potatoes and peas from said allotment which were fanbloodytastic. definately spend the first few sessions getting all that damn grass stuff out cause it grows and grows. there will always be plenty of people saying dont do it like that - but do like i have plant rows sideways and in clumps rather then in lovely straight rows - just because you can!! enjoy

My father had 4 allotments until he switched his job to nightshift and had to give them up.

Best thing to do is digg it all up and properly clear it from all weeds and roots and rubbish.

Horse muck is a brilliant idea. Most people end up throwing in straw aswell but I think it's a real load of crap. Yes, if the straw or other 'raw' material you're throwing in is decomposing already then it's fine.

It's late for patato's.
Horse manure should be tilled in at the end of the growing season and allowed to decompose before planting. If not, the high levels of chemicals will "burn" your plants.
