Bedding plants in Peat Free Compost.?
Question:I bought a pack of bedding plants suitable for a patio container from B&Q.
I've just planted them in a container but have realised the label said use Peat Free compost and I used Multi Purpose Compost.
Do you think it will hurt the bedding plants?
I can't remember the names of all the plants but include petunias, fuscias, busy lizzies and a couple of others.
Thank you to anyone able to give me some advice.
Answers:
not to worry, multi purpose is fine. instructions were to discourage the use of peat as stocks have diminished and alternatives are recommended to preserve the peat bogs. peat is mainly used for rhododendrons, azaleas and heathers.
I think they`ll be fine, multi-purpose compost is what I would have planted the bedding plants you mentioned in. I`m sure multi-purpose compost will be peat free. Hope they turn into pretty plants for you, good luck!
Peat free is the main recommendation just because it tends not to be quite so destructive to the planet - it is the grower's way of making you think about what you are doing.
no they will be fine,
Your plants will be fine. It has nothing to do with your choice of plants, its to help the environment... Gardeners are being asked to use "peat-free" compost as a way of making a difference to the natural environment.More than 94% of Lowland Bogs in the UK have been destroyed or damaged. By using Peat-Free Composts you are helping to save this threatened habitat...
