What can i put on new lawn to get good thick dirt holding roots grown on what was just bare dirt?

Question:Need to cut down on rain washing dirt away whats good to promote good deep roots? Would compost work. a place here in town gives away mulch going to see if they have compost or could mulch do the trick as long as i rake off the big pieces. Thanks

Answers:
You could till up the area or build up the area with additional top soil. Grass seed roots quickly, however, if you want immediate gratification till the soil and put down sod. With sod you get instant grass and no more soil erosion.

we had a yard of sand.. a really good grass bermuda centipede zoisia is what stopped the washing out of the lawn into the middle of the road...what you have sounds thin..you need to thicken it up..you can put pieces of cut up sod in places that are the worst wont look fantastic this year unless you do the entire area..but next year it will look better
