Flowers that can stand the heat!?

Question:I live in Colorado, and lately its been 100 degrees everyday, and my flowers are dying! What flowers can take the heat? Annuals or perennials will both do... Any suggestions?

Answers:
Your best authority on what flowers will do well in your area is your Extension Service. Not only will they have information about heat tolerant plants for your area, they will have publications on just about everything else also. Check it out at:

Now please excuse me while I go explore, I never know what I might learn from another state's extension service!!

If you want somthing to withstand heat look for plants that thrive in or up to zone 9. Zone 9 covers most of the southern U.S. and we know heat!!
Water them every day in the evening. It's that hot here often during the summer too, and we don't have any problems with the flowers. You just need to rememeber to water them enough.
Perriwinkles. As long as you water them every other day or so they do great in the Texas heart so I figure they will do well elsewhere too. You want to plant them as starter plants from a nursery or home supply and be sure to water them in well and fertilize at the time of olanting and once a week or so to have continued full blooming with optimumcoloring. I have white, pink, and red in a bed around a small tree(8' tall) in my front yard and they are besutiful, especially w/ all the rain we have had. I chose Perriwinkles one year about 12 years ago for summer planting and have always been happy with them. They grow pretty tall and thin with a height of about 14" t0 18".
Here are a few options (I prefer annuals for the most color):

Zinnias
Vinca (Periwinkles)
Portulaca (Moss Rose)
Begonias should do fine with close care.

Also perennial Salvias are very heat tolerant and colorful. Varieties include "Lady in Red" and "Victoria Blue"
My favorites are zinnias and anything in the sedum family.
There are a multitude of day lillies that should work, coneflowers, Sedum, and Blue Fortune Agastache.
Welcome to God's Garden!
Try anything in the sunflower family. My personal favorite is Blanket Flower (Gualardia).
Verbena and Canna survived my heat of up to 114 last summer in California. You may have to mulch the Canna or dig the bulbs in the winter, but they do very well with water. Also Verbena is very very hardy and will bloom their heads off. Also Lantana. It did well also. Wish you were here in Ca I have 30 Canna plants I'm trying to get a good home for.
With the Cannas I have Yellow Richard Wallace. They are better known for around ponds etc but don't let that fool you they did great in the blazing heat. . My reds Cannas are an Heirloom Red. I believe the purple Verbena did the best and the purple Lantana also did the best. Enjoy! You will have blooms galore and they love the heat. Everyones flowers burned up and mine bloomed and bloomed. Remember to fertilize and water as the heat can be stressful. This is our Global warming and I moved to the coast last month to get away from the heat. Brought most of my plants along as they lasted through the winter here which is milder then Colorado.
Let me know how you do with them!!
Hi DRP, To quote Paris Hilton, "That's hot!"...LOL! Why not try starting a "cactus garden"? My neighbors house is surrounded by beautiful cacti. The flowers some of them produce are quite exotic. However, if you have toddlers under foot, annuals and perennials are your best bet. In that case I would recommend (annuals) "Celosia, Cosmos, Marigolds"; (perennials) "Geraniums, Rudebeckia, Fibrous Begonias". Good Luck! XOXO Moonpie P.S. I agree with Sarah, I've had great success with Lantana and Verbena!
well geraniums, marigolds, vinca, and so many more that your garden center can point out even if you don't buy them their.
But even in zone 9,the temperture can get to hot for some plants, its like the dessert weather,Have you thaught about cactus?Garden center advice, good luck
