How can I Grow Butternut squash? If I sow the seeds from a butternut squash will they grow?
Question:
Answers:
Yes they will grow. You will need to allow the seeds to dry out for a time though. Also you will need to plant them at the begining of the growing season.
IF you plant them late in the season they will still grow but probably not produce squash big enough to eat. Unless you have room to somehow grow them indoors. However Indoor planting requires a certain light cycle in order to get the plant to flower in which shortly thereafter your plant will start to produce fruit.
have a good day :)
Depends. If they are cultivated quite naturally and open to fertilisation from bees, birds insects etc, then yes the seeds should be able to germinate. However, you can never be sure if the fruit, in this case the butternut squash, has been subjected to radiation to kill the bacteria that shortens the shelf life etc. That will cause the seeds to become infertile.
There are so many factors. However in the case of Butternut Squash I think you would have a good chance of growing the seeds. Certain foods are generally grown naturally in the open, squashes being one of them. And because they take a long time to rot down and release the seeds naturally they have a long shelf life without interference from man. Avocado pears are like this as well, and most beans. Most of them bought in the supermarket will germinate and grow.
Good luck
Edit:- Just thought I'd mention, drying seeds is only necessary to preserve them. I grow tomatoes just by squishing the pulp and seeds out of a fresh tomato, into soil suitable for growing seedlings, and hey presto, lots of tomato plants. You need to have unmolested tomatoes though. I started with tomatoes from a local farm, and have been using the offspring from them for years, LOL. There's nothing like living of nature for pure pleasure and taste
It´s almost too late in the year to grow butternut now. But you can try. The butternut from the greengrocers may be fruit from a hybrid plant (that is the seeds of plants that have been crossed with each other eg. a plant that grows good fruit but a weak grower, crossed with a plant that is a good grower, but has tasteless fruit) In this case, you may land up with all sorts of mutations of the two parent plants. But, with some luck, your fruit is a true seed variety, and the seed always produce the same type growth and fruit. I have tossed butternut seeds and peelings in the compost, and they have sprouted.
i think they grow the same as marrow or pumpkin at least i hope so because ive just grown some plants from seed and now i,m waiting
