How do I begin to grow pumpkins at home?
Question:
Answers:
First, clear a large area. Three foot by three foot works, that way the vines will not have to compete with anything until they get older. But I'd say bigger. I planted my pumpkins last year in a narrow bed by the lawn, they were all over the lawn by fall. Dig in a bunch of compost--I like cotton burr or aged manure. Then, make "craters" about one foot across and about three feet apart to hold the water near the seeds. Put about four seeds in each crater, then water well (but don't overwater). They should come up in a week or less, but sometimes they take two weeks to germinate. When the plants have their first few leaves, thin them to two per crater. Keep them well watered. It's normal for them to droop a bit in the hottest part of the day, but make sure they have enough water to be perky the rest of the time. When you start getting baby pumpkins, put straw under each fruit to prevent rotting. If you want giant pumpkins, then pinch off all the young fruits but one per plant and also pinch off the growing tip, so that the plants devote all their energy to the one pumkin.
Hope this helps.

plant pumpkin seeds where there is a lot of space. they do spread out more then you think.
Funny you should ask this question. Last Halloween we smashed our pumpkins in the garden & then forgot about them over the winter. Yesterday I was looking at the recent plants I put in & there they were ..at least 10 pumpkin plants coming up on their own. Now I don't know if this is the proper way but it worked for me. let's see if I get any pumpkins on the plants.
