Weed in lawn with root running under grass?

Question:I have looked at several weed identification websites and cant find anything even close.

My home is in Massachusetts.

I have a small weed that pops up. It has small leaves that are red and green. When I dig down to get rid of it, it is connected to a large woody root that runs laterally about 4 inches down. This root is not a tree root. I have pulled a few of them up and they peter out on their own. Plus, there arent any trees even remotely by.

Can anyone tell me what this might be, and or tell me what class of weed it might be?

Answers:
I don't know what that might be.. I'm not in your area, though. You might try looking for it here:

It's a pretty good site that shows invasive weeds.

Good Luck.

no, but pull one up and take it to a good lawn and garden place. Or the agricultural dept. head in your area, I know they can tell you. There are sprays for everything.
