How to remove 1000s of maple saplings from a grass lawn?
Question:Weeding them out would take days, and not sure if they'd come back. Is there a pesticide-free approach?
Answers:
Mow them.
lawnmower works they will die if you them cutting them
THOUSANDS?
I'd transplant every one of them and let them grow to maturity. That wood is worth a nice chunk of change today. Of course, you want to keep your yard a yard.I don't blame you a bit.
If you pull them up, they won't grow back. I wonder--if they're that dense, what about just tilling the affected area under and reseeding it with a hardy grass? I know, it's almost summer now. You could till it under and bring in sod, but the first several weeks are ugly. And sod is expensive.
Got any neighbor kids that are entrepreneurally inclined? If it were me, I would get several to come over and pull those saplings out of the ground, paying them maybe a dime for each one pulled. Or, you could find a couple of kids and offer to pay them $100 to pull every tree sapling they see growing in your yard.(this is far cheaper than a dime for each tree-do the math). Either way, pulling them is probably the best environmental solution.
Good Luck!
If they are new this year, mowing should kill them off with no problem. If they are a couple of years old, you may have to make several efforts at mowing them or cutting them back so that they have no leaves and thus cannot feed themselves.
