Rat problem?
Question:HI folks, i just started growing my own little garden, i dont know much really, and i dug a small hole in my garden and dumped some left over foods which we didnt want to eat, thinking that this would help my soil, before planting flowers, anyhoos, i dont think i dug the hole deep enough cos some rat has sniffed it out and has been coming to my garden for the takings, and thing is, we went out and bought some tall netted fencing and attached it to our fence, and we put lots of stones at the bottom to make sure there was no enterance for the wee "rat" but it still got in cos it chewed a hole in the netting, this i knew would happen, and i have argued to my husband to use poisen but hes totally against killing anything (which is a good thing) BUT, it means this rat will forever come my garden, and i have littles ones to think about, how else can i deterre a rat from my garden?? like umm,,,pepper, would pepper nip its wee nose? from the naive gardener.

You didn't say what "left over foods" that you buried in your garden. You don't want to put any meats, fats or bones in the garden for composting, or any cooked veggies that may have had oils put on them. Some will say that breads are OK but I would never use them. Basically, only use uncooked veggie scraps, coffee or tea grounds.
As far as the rat goes, use a trap to catch it and dispose of it. I prefer glue traps, just place it where the rat chewed through the fence. Using poison is a bad thing to do, especially with children. If you use poison, you have no way to control where the animal dies and it could be eaten by another animal.

Noo that was a mistake! You need a compost bin to let any left overs decompose, than you can spread it over soil
Hi try this web page www.pesthelp.co.uk/weshop/Rats... it's an Electronic device that sends out signals to keep rats away. I have used their device for getting rid of ants and it works!

You need to protect your children. Buy a rat trap, bait it with peanut butter for three days without setting the trap. On the fourth day, bait it again and set the trap. You'll catch your rat. Set it again the next few days just to make sure there weren't more than one.
Ah! A gardening question...!
You've come to the right place...
I hate pulling weeds more than anyone...!
Let's see...where do I begin...?
Oh yes...
"Rats in your garden...?!?
Let's see...
1. Don't try to create your own mulch...the results of that you've already witnessed, so we won't elaborate any further on that one...(just buy some cheap mulch or plant food at the store)
2. Cats are the Great Guardians of the Garden, for they do not eat vegetables, and they enjoy nothing more than catching, torturing, and then eating "rats," or leaving them dead, dessicated, and sucked dry in your garden soil...(be sure to pick them up by the tail, hold them at arms' length with a wrinkled nose, and toss them over the neighbor's fence...they don't make good mulch...and neither do your neighbors...)
3. Hide the maryjane plants in the rows of corn...(shame on you)
4. Stand naked in your garden at midnight during a full moon, and chant this spell to dispel all rats from your horticultural realm...
Oh, evil rats scurrying down by my toes...
Begone at once from my garden rows
I send you back into your starless den of night
Straight back to Hell, and gone from my sight...!
Works everytime...
Why don't you just get your own RAT out and let them play together, oh and video it for your wuss husband!
You need to get rid of these as you have little ones and rats carry all sorts of diseases ignore your husband most local councils have a pest control Dept and do not charge for poisoning rats as they are a health hazzard.
