I have a small pond, can I make a waterfall?
Question:I have a 125 gal pond. We would like to have a waterfall. Is that possible with a small pond. Also what size of water fall pump would I need. Anyone have any ideas as how to make a small water fall?
Answers:
Yes, it's possible. I made a waterfall for my 800 gallon pond. My "Geez, I wish I'd known this!" tips for other amateurs:
1. Decide how tall/wide you want your waterfall. Look at MANY pictures on the Internet for ideas. Don't be in a hurry. This can take weeks. Your waterfall won't end up looking like the pictures, but it's helpful to see what others have done.
2. Build the mound for your waterfall. Don't pack the dirt, but don't leave it loose either. Keep it damp while building.
3. Purchase a pond liner and your flat waterfall stones (the number depends on how many tiers you want). Drape the pond liner over your mound. Experiment placing your flat stones over the liner to create your waterfall; you will have to reach under the liner to dig holes for the stones, then tuck the liner into the holes. Make sure your stones are firmly set into the mound. This may take days! To check the water flow, place a hose at the top of your waterfall. Much trial and error, and patience, is needed for this step. DO NOT trim the liner until you're absolutely sure everything's working.
4. "My water won't flow right!" Two helpful words: waterfall foam. Use it, once you've established your waterfall, to plug cracks and stray trickles. It also helps "glue" the rocks in place.
5. Gravel and various-sized rocks and plants may be used to enhance your waterfall and conceal the pond liner. This is the fun part.
6. Purchase a waterfall pump. What size? Calculate it at http://www.calpump.com/pumpdesign.asp...
7. Fish, plants, and a biofilter are good additions. I won't go into that here, because this is already long enough.
Good luck!
I would take your ideas to Home Depot of Lowes, they have great staff to give you ideas to make a waterfall.
Some questions they may ask:
1. How many gallons is the pond
2. Do you plan on having any fish, plants in it
3. How much light exposure will this pond have
Some things to consider:
1. Do you plan to have rocks to hide the pump?
2. Do you have an electrical source for the pump?
3. Have you secured any permits that could be necessary in your town?
I would talk with the experts, they deal with this everyday.
you could also try www.diynet.com, and www.hgtv.com for ideas and installation points!
VERY MUCH so. As a matter of fact, I just started on the project. There is a water fall kit you can buy from home center. All you need is a pump really, and electric outlet near by, if not draw one. I would have ot done by a licensed electrician.
If I were you I would go buy a submersible water sump pump and just use that as your pump...they are cheap and they work very well. We use them in the concrete industry to pump water out of foundations before we pour concrete in them.
