How much should I pay a teen to do yard work per hour?
Question:I'm hiring a 15 year old from the neighborhood to do assorted yard work for me. He'll be using my equipment. He doesn't know what to charge and neither do I. I'd like to pay him by the hour and (if he does a good job) tip him well as I know he's trying to earn money to go to sports camp. What would be fair?
Answers:
I'd pay him per job. If he does a good job on it, then give him a bit more. For example:
Lawn Mowing: $5-10
Weed Pulling (Hour or two): $7-15
And you can give him a tip at the end. But one of my relatives hired a teenager to do some yardwork, and paid him by the hour. They were not happy with the quality. But when they paid him per job, it was better quality.
I think $9.00 per hour is fair and if he gets more then he will know it is a tip. Nice thing you are doing - setting him up for later in life.
i'm a 16 year old.
about 2 years ago had a small job mowing lawns.
the person who i did this for gave me $20 each time (which was about once bi-weekly) i think that was a very good deal.
if i were you i would probibly give about 5 to 10 dollers an hour
i'm sorry to disagree with the lady before me, but $9 an hour is way to much to pay a 15 year old. kids are way to spoiled these days. they expect to make as much as an adult. $5 and hour is real good. its not like he has to provide equipment or any expertise. when i was 13, i hauled watermelons and hay for $20 per day, thats 10 to 12 hours per day. but, that was over 20 years ago and teen age boys worked back then.
First off pay by the job not by the hour.Teens know how to milk the pump. They are good at dinking around
Somewhere between 5 to 10 an hour, plus buy his lunch if he is there during the noon hour.
Extra heavy jobs, of course should be better compensated.
As far as setting the wage, I think you should involve him in a negotiation. This is a skill that all teens need to learn, and what better/safer opportunity than when talking about a few weekend hours during the summer? Doing this will help him in job interviews later in life.
i would say bout 9 dollars an hour.
jon..
have you noticed a slight increase in the amont we pay for goods today, then when you were a kid?
its called inflation, and when products prices go up. wages must go up.
so i think 9 dollars is a fair
How good do you want your lawn to look?. give to little and it will reflect the worth of pay... give just right and you will have a masterpiece and a motivated 15 yr old willing to bend over backwards. also how many sq ft would he be covering?...
no fifteen yr old i have known would work for something not worth it... so ultimately it depends on his worth.
I think $5.00 an hour is pretty good. The tip at the end should be 25.00 if he does great and works fast 10.00 if he is slow and does not do a good job and 17.00 if hes in between.
I start just over minimum wage for my shop helpers .And tell them If they do a good job and they get more. They know they did a good thing and will try to get it more. After I see (and I tell them at first ) they are good workers I increase often up 2 $10 hour . Its the only way I can keep help.
I'm offered up to 15 dollars and hour for and I can't get a teen to show up more than one week time to ride a mower for 2 hours and weedeat a little. . The kids are so lazy around here its crazy.
