How do I clear up caterpillars in my trees?

You didn't say what part of the country you are from but what you are probably talking about is tent caterpillars.
These pests can be found just about everywhere in the country. They form cocoons/tents in trees. They eat the leaves on trees.
Some people recommend cutting the branches off the tree where the cocoons are. They used to burn them years ago but now they say to put the branch in a plastic bag and tying it tightly so they can't get out. Put bag in your garbage can.
The infestation goes away on it's own in about a month, even if you do nothing.
What makes them a real nuisance is when they drop out of the trees and land on you. Not for the faint of heart.
