I have weeds growing between my pumpkin plants What do I do.?
Question:I’m not sure if I should spray, pull them, or leave them. My 200 Pumpkin plants are still about a 1 tall and the weeds are like a ground cover all over my whole patch. Will they become a big factor to my pumpkins or not.
Answers:
they will steal water fromyour plants... i wouldnt spray them.. id get dirty by pulling them out. takes some time and work but that is the best way and it will not contaminate your pumpkins.
Pull them out.
do not spray them- you'll be eating the spray with the pumpkin. pull- do it after you water or after it rains heavily- much easier.
You can compost your weeds
The weeds will deprive your pumpkins of water, sun and nutrients. You should water thoroughly and them pull them by hand. Your pumpkins should be at least three feet apart, so this may also be a good time for thinning. Good luck!
Well, it sounds like you have a large pumpkin patch. I would get worried about spraying the weeds if the pumpkin vines are intertwined within them. If they are not, I would try to spray some weeds, pull the ones that are close to the plants. I would then put some mulch around the pumpkin plants to keep weeds away from them.
Next year if you grow pumpkins, you may want to put down some plastic or some weed barrier either over the whole garden or just around the area where you plant the seeds to keep the weeds out.
Pull them, they'll sap water and nutrients from your pumpkins. After you pull, put down a nice thick 3" layer of mulch, straw works just fine and is cheap. That will prevent weed re-growth.
Will certainly compete for nutrients. Invest in a hoe and get to work while the weeds are still small!
