What is causing the radishes from my garden to be so hot??

Question:I thought that lack of watering or irregular watering made them hot. I've been keeping them watered I don't understand why they are so hot. What else would cause this?

Answers:
There are a couple of reasons it could be, slow development, heat stress, or in the ground to long

I found these quotes for you:

Radishes grow well in almost any soil that is prepared well, is fertilized before planting and has adequate moisture maintained. Slow development makes radishes hot in taste and woody in texture.

Radishes mature rapidly under favorable conditions and should be checked often for approaching maturity. Harvest should begin as soon as roots reach edible size and should be completed quickly, before heat, pithiness or seedstalks can begin to develop.

Pull radishes when they are of usable size (usually staring when roots are less than 1 inch in diameter) and relatively young. Radishes remain in edible condition for only a short time before they become pithy (spongy) and hot. Proper thinning focuses the harvest and avoids disappointing stragglers that have taken too long to develop.

Good luck!

you bought hot radishes....that's what I love, you probably meant to buy the sweet ones
Could be the variety of seeds you bought.
probably just the variety.keeping them well watered and planting in a semi shady area will also help to cool them but next time you buy seeds look for varieties which aren't hot. i love radishes but hate the peppery ones!
Are they out in the sun most of the day?

Or did you mean your radishes are sexy?
EWWW.. I had this problem last year too. And we came to the conclusion that we left them out to long. You need to pick them a little bit earlier as soon as they are develope other wise they sit and get a real hot taste to them...
