How long should I water in each spot?
Question:I live in Northern Indiana. How long should I water each spot of my lawn with a hose-end sprinkler before it's overkill?
Answers:
Grass grows deeper roots in the fall and spring, but they die back in the summer. Because of this, you may want to water longer in one spot in the fall and spring, but for shorter periods of time more frequently in the summer. You can find a little bit more information about this at the web page below.
In am in Western New York - I usually leave my sprinkler in an area for about an hour, then I move it.
I live in South Georgia, so my answer may not be appropriate for you. For us, in dry spells, it is recommended that we water for 3 hours in each spot. By the way, I have visited Indiana, and found some of the most wonderful people I have ever met.
I'm from Ohio(very similar to Indiana). I was always told 1 inch a week. To do this, buy a cheap rain gauge(you can usually find one for a couple of dollars at walmart or a dollar store) and put it out near your sprinkler. This will help you gauge how much water your lawn is getting.
I place a rain gauge in the area of my sprinkler. When it reads 1 inch, I move the sprinkler. I too live in Indiana and most of my garden plants require about an inch of rain per week. Works great for me. Water during the day light hours. The foilage will be drier before dark. Which will help the bug situation .
