How many worms do I need to start my worm bin?

Question:I have a 12 gal rubbermaid container and about thirty worms. I keep reading that you need a POUND! Is this true or do I have enough?

Answers:
I've got the same problem. We started the worm bin a couple of months ago and just put some worms from the yard in there. I couldn't bring myself to buy worms! I think that it is a matter of having a critical mass of worms to multiply the population. We might eventually get a large population of worms, but it's going to take a long time. It's also a matter of having the worms, Eisenia fetida or Red Wigglers, that everyone suggests you have. I think we'll have to break down and buy some, but I don't know if we'll have to wait for cooler weather for them to be shipped to us.

yeah, you need pound. Worms may die off and if thats the case, you will need enough to back up your population
