What can I grow between cracks in cement, besides weeds?
Question:I have a front and back porch, with steps, and cracks in the cement. Currently weeds occupy this space. I live in Portland, OR where green grows everywhere! What can I plant in these tiny spaces that will look better than the current weeds? I am also interested in what the best product to get rid of the weeds would be (the cracks are too small for me to get at the roots). Once they are gone I want to plant a moss or ground cover of some sort (so it doesn't interfere with the stairs)but still provides some urban greenery. Any suggestions, maybe something that worked for you?? Please site sources and thank you! :)
Answers:
Creeping phlox. You can get some nice color, too.
There are a lot of ground covers that grow close to the ground, and grow in tight places...look at some of the different mosses...
First of all, get rid of the weeds by using Round Up spray in the cracks, but read the label as there are different types, and
you may not be able to replant for a few months, as some of them stay in the ground for a bit. Next, search the net for xeriscape gardening/rock gardenening/rock garden plants. People put plants in cracks of rocks successfully all the time.
