depending on the size of plant that you get, they can be expensive. the roots need oxygen so orchids need special potting mix of moss and wood fiber chips. those usually already come when you buy a plant, depending on where you buy them.

if your friend is partial to easy to care house plants, she could also do a Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum).

I've had mine for three years now, and with a few close calls, i've got two flowers at once. It is poisonous to cats so not a good idea there. Hope that this has helped!

Orchid

Orchids! They come in many colors, are fragrant and beautiful and some are very rare.
Hi you don't say weather the leaves are various colours or the flowers. Sounds like it could be an Orchid though.

It would help a lot if you could find a picture of what you are looking for, If it is an orchid then different ones have different growing requirements. I have grown orchids for about 30 years, and I can tell you that some are easy to grow, but you have to know what that particular kind needs, or you are just wasting money. One of the cheapest places to buy orchids on line id "Oak Hill Gardens". Their quality and service is great. Not all orchids are fragrant, not all have the dame requirements for water, light, and temperature either. So do your research. Their are a lot of other flowers that start with "O" also. One of these is the shrub oleander, which comes in a wide variety of colors and is so easy to grow that highway departments in some states plant it along the road. It is also one of the most poisonous plants in the United States, so don't grow it around babies or toddlers who tend to put everything in their mouth.
