Rose of Sharon hedge, your thoughts, pros and cons please.?

Question:Especially if you have a RoS hedge. Thanks.

Answers:
Hardy little trees, come in a wealth of colors and bloom like crazy--for best results trim in the fall and cut off all seed pods to maintain bloom. You can also start more from cuttings taken in the fall and pushed into the ground or from seed. I had lavender, white, white with red centers and a light pink in NC and also ID.

I don't have one but I want one really bad and plan to put some in hopefully soon. My neighbor had one that I loved but he cut it down. I was sad. I like them because they grow nice and high and have the beautiful flowers on them all summer.
I was actually named after this plant :-)

I had a ros hedge in PA, didn't need it to screen anything, so I absolutely loved it.

Not sure what you are looking for in a hedge, but here are my thoughts on ros as a hedge:

Pros:
Beautiful flowers.
Hardy plants.

Cons:
Relatively slow growing, won't fill in as fast.
Deciduous, so no leaves in the winter.

If you want a hedge for screening, I would go with something evergreen. Hollies are one idea. Arborvitae are good also.

If you don't necessarily need good screening, then try the ros.

Here is one website I found about hedges:

Good luck!
I have my back 6' fence lined with rose of sharon and they are beautiful! Mine have flowers that are white with red centers and they bloom all summer long. Also, they are sturdy and require little care. Mine are mature and at about 8' , with medium density. Their shape is loose and unstructured, with branches gently bowing out into the yard and over the fence. It's a real treat to see the flowers blooming and adding color when many of my flowers have packed up in the summer heat. Also they are evergreen in my zone (7b). Pretty drought tolerant, too.

Cons: really, none I can think of. I think they are better in bunches than as a specimen plant. For that I'd choose a butterfly bush! JMO. ;)
