Help with Bachelor Buttons?
Question:I have planted numerous of these and all that seems to be coming up is leaves. They are very full and seem to be taking over the entire area, but no flower in sight.
Anyone have experience with these flowers? I have seen pictures of them and know they are eventually beautiful, but how long before they actually produce a flower?
Answers:
Should germinate in 7 to 14 days. Grows 2 to 3’ tall. Deadheading of spent flowers will prolong bloom period.
Bachelor buttons are easy to grow from seeds outdoors. Sow in spring, 1 to 2 weeks before the last expected frost, for early summer blooms. They can also be sown in fall in mild climates for early spring blooms.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart. The seeds need complete darkness to germinate, so make sure they are well covered. When seedlings are 1 to 2 inches tall, thin them to 6 to 8 inches apart. The first blooms appear 10 to 12 weeks after planting, and last for about a month. Successive plantings can extend the bloom period.
It takes 10-12 weeks for the flowers to appear.
Try adding a fertilizer with relatively lower nitrogen than phosphorous and potassium to increase blooms and produce relatively less greenery. That is, the first number in the fertilizer rating should be lower than the middle one and, preferably, lower than the third one, e.g., 5-10-5, or 3-12-6.
