How to deadhead?
Question:I have been told numerous times to deadhead my flowers, but have no clue what this means. Well, I know that logic tells me it is to remove the heads of the flowers, but do I just remove the heads or does the stem have to be clipped, or what?
Answers:
just gently pinch the dead flowers from their stems--really n/b/d
I have always PINCHED the "head" off of those flowers that have died.
Just cut off the heads with scissors or pinch them off. Most people cut or snip them back so there aren't "sticks" sticking off the flowers. Be careful and check our your plant shoots out new flowers.
It depends on the flower. On shrubs, like roses, prune back two or three leaves on the stem to an outward-facing leaf so the new growth will grow away from the center of the plant. For most flowers, gazania, marigolds, etc, just clip off the dead flowers.
Aloha,
There is nothing about deadhead in the sunset book, so your up against some people who don't know what there saying.
It seems Dr. Deal needs to expand his horizons. Or try reading his Sunset bible.

it depends what kind of plant it is. If its roses I just take of the dried flower tops
if its say geranium I cut of the stem too. any other flower I have just taken off the flower heads. I been gardening for over 38 years now. I was taught by my grandmother who had a garden till she was 95. we called her BUSIA in polish. If you notice that when you take off the flower head and a long stem protrudes from sticking out then cut the stem down to.
Deadhead just means to remove the dead flowers. You can remove just the flower and the tip of the stem or you can cut the stem back to just above a leaf.
One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to deadhead plants is to cut the flowers to bring them indoors. Always cut the stem just above a leaf. Also remember, the longer the cut stem, the longer it will take the plant to reflower. One advantage to making a longer stem is that you remove the branches and will create larger flowers when the plant reflowers.
