Has anyone made fake rocks for an outdoor water feature?
Question:What did you make it out of and where did you get the idea. Did they hold together well? I just put a small pond out back. I don't have money to go buy rock and I can't go hunt them down and lift them. I saw this idea and just wondered if anyone eles had made them and how hard would it be. I need something that will last. Any ideas to hardscape around my pond would be appreciated.

Our theater group needed rocks for a set design twenty some years ago. We used chicken wire and fiberglass resin, but instead of using fiberglass batting we used nylon and polyester from recycled clothing etc. Its much easier to work an a lot less scratchy. Over the years we've used, reused and abused them and they just keep looking better all the time. We keep them stored outside all year when not in use. The only thing I would have done differently would be to use natural earth tone fabric, we initially used some brite colors that always need to be repainted. RScott
I haven't used fake rocks for a "water feature", but my friend built his pool & surrounded it with waterfalls that were made out of fake rocks so I know that you CAN do it & my guess it's pretty good about holding up! I know that a lot of people do this & I would call up the company who makes the rock & see if they would give you a contractors name who "specializes" with working with this type of rock or ask them for everything that you will need to do this project yourself. As far as ideas to hardscape around your pond you can always go to the website of HGTV & see if they show anything like this for info. I know that when I go up on their site it usually shows things in a step by step procedure. Enjoy your pond!!
I think, if you are a little clever, that you could make fake rocks using fiberglass. This way, you could shape them in any way you like, even making a waterfall if you like. Then find the appropriate paint, and paint whatever color you like. Just make sure it is not toxic if using for fish.
