Use it at night on their nests. They do not leave their nests at night.
In order to solve your situation you have to...

1) Find it's nesting location

2) Kill it around June because that's when there's bairley any because in June it's when they start creating their nest.

3) Since your afraid of them eradicate them
you need to get a bug killer that can spray from like 15 feet away. i got this stuff from raid that does. i just get as far away as i can, hose the nest down with poison, then run like hell for the screen door. they will be dead before they have a chance to chase you.
Find their nest and wait until dusk. All of the wasps will be in the nest. That spray will spray from several feel away so give the nest a good spraying and the wasps or hornets will be gone for good.
no they wont sting you if you use fly spray , you have to spray some of them a night using red cellphone around a torch
One thing I do know is to kill them at night after they're sleeping...usually around dusk. It seems they have a habit of nesting in the same area, so will keep coming back for some time. Good luck!
I will try to explain to you how we just to kill them in the country side when I was young, not so long ago. :-)
Get a Medium size open can, make sure that its big enough to fit the wasp nest. Put some holes through the can, in order to make a smoker. Attach a pole, or a stick to the side of the can to make a handle, so that you can reach a high place and hold the can. Start some coal briquets inside the can in order to create smoke, wasps are afraid of smoke.
Carefully!!!, come close to the wasp nest with the smoker until all the wasps are gone. Once all the wasps are gone, cover the wasp nest with the smoker can and move/shake until nest drops, you might want to find a brave boy for this, but this should take care of the problem. Clean where the nest was so that they don't start it again. Hope this helps!
If you can find the nest and it is in the open (not in a corner), take an old plastic bowl big enough to fit over the nest. Spray it good with your spray. Put a big piece of duct tape on the bottom with the ends sticking out. At night, tape the bowl over the nest. They will be dead in the morning.

If that scares you, take a 2-liter bottle, cut off the top third and invert it in the bottom. Put an inch or so of fresh cola in it and leave it out for them. They are drawn in but cannot get out. I did this in my shed and they were all dead in 2 days (I'm highly allergic to them).
