Sounds like transplant shock, which is basically water loss caused by the roots being cut when it was moved. It's ditching its leaves to avoid losing even more water through leaf resipration. It's an effort to save itself.
It needs water. If it's possible, run a hose out to it, and place the open end near the trunk. Then turn it on to a trickle, and let it go for an hour. Do that about every 5 days. The slow depp watering will avoid the pitfall of "fast" watering going into the surrounding soil, rather than penetrating the rootball.
Maybe it has transplant shock. Try some Quick Start.
the tree might have been infected by some sort of insect. i had birch trees on my property but they all were infected by whatever insect it was...i don't remember the name of it. or it might also be planting shock
