How do I get rid of bagworms from my Fruitless Mullberry Tree? The?
Question:The bagworms seemed to have proliferated this year because of a wet spring. I don't want to lose a sixty year old tree.
Answers:
Are they bag worms or web worms ? Alot of people call web worms bag worms. Bag worms are worms wrapped in and hanging from the leaves of the plant or tree. Web worms, which love mulberry trees, have a white silky web formed in and around a small group of leaves , the worms are visible in the web usually. Use a pyrethrin to control both worms, soak the web or spray directly into and penetrate the web for control of web worms. Or you can prune the web out of the tree and place it in a plastic trash bag and seal it.Rairly would web worms kill a tree of that size, I've seen pecan and walnut trees completly defoliated from web worms and it didnt hurt them at all.
The best time to spray for bagworms is in June or July. You want to inspect your tree as most sprays are only effective on the small larvae that hatch from the 'bag'. There are reports that say the best time to spray is right when the redbud trees in your area are blooming. When you see the small larvae emerging from the sacs, use eithe Dipel or Thuricide (commonly known and sold as a product called BT). Use a fine mist and make sure to get the whole tree. Good luck.
