Why is there always sand on astroturf pitches?

Question:There always seems to be sand on them... who puts it there and why?

Answers:
I thought it was to do with drainage but I could be wrong

the groundsman puts it on to help soak up the rain
It comes from above, they are call astro turf cos aliens land on then.
The football field at my high school was astroturf, and there was no sand on it.
It is because the turf is layed on a sand bed. This moves and settles. So there can be a depression in the pitch. The groundsman will add sand in that area and it eventually penetrates the turf and gives extra support where it is needed. (So I am told anyway)
it is put on because the ball bounces abnormally high on astroturf the sand is put on to deaden the bounce
