I have been growing sweet basil at home. How do I care for it?

Question:I know you have to pluck the little white flowers that grow, but can you just cut the stem where they are growing? Or is just plucking better? I want more bushy basil. Cutting the stem seems easier because those flowers grow so fast! Help!

Answers:
you have to do more than pinch off the flowers...you should cut down lower into the stem - if the flowers are growing your plant thinks it is time to turn to seed.

pinch down a little lower in the plant to cause more vigourous growth.

make sure it gets enough sunlight water and fertelizer.

You should let a couple of the plants turn to seed and replant the seeds as well - this way you will have your basil continue to grow.

good luck to you

Fertilize weekly during the growing season and pinch off all flower heads to prevent from going to seed.
Hi:
Basil is a great herb to grow at home. It grows well in full sun and water it regularly. Cut the flower near the base of the leaves and dry the flowers for an arrangement. Cut the flowers at an angle, as this will promote new growth and a fuller plant. I hope this has helped some and if you have any more questions on basil or any other plant need, please feel free to contact me at my website. Take a look in landscape articles and read about growing herbs from seeds as well as drying them. Best of luck to you and let us know how your basil grows.
