Gardenia Question?
Question:Years ago I took some gardenia cuttings and I transplanted them after they had a good root system. Why did it take 3 years before they started blooming?
Answers:
Plants usually have to get "root bound" before they bloom. The plant must form a sturdy root system to support the rest of the plant first.
Some times it takes a while for a plant to mature enough to support offspring, indicated by the blooms.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that they are not grafted. Grafted gardenias are hardier than ones taken from cuttings. Also gardenia cuttings will suffer from more nematode problems if they are planted in the ground.
