Plants.. In an irish climate??
Question:hi im looking for a plant that you can eat eg: potatoes strawberries for my garden and i need them to grow at a climate like ireland in a small area i dont have a greenhouse
Answers:
Hi there. I am not exactly sure what the climate in Ireland is, but I'm thinking it may be a temperate climate similar to New Zealand?
If this is the case, I had success when we lived there, with growing plants such as leeks, carrots, cabbage, brussel sprouts, broad beans, silver beet, broccoli and swedes. All of these vegetables prefer the cooler climates and they grow best at temps between 10 - 20oC. They are also somewhat frost tolerant.
Other factors too can effect your gardens micro climate. Large trees that overshadow gardens will make your garden cooler. Brick walls and paved areas around you garden patch will absorb the suns heat during the day and make your garden warmer.
Hope this is of some help. Happy gardening.
Hi,
Try SWEET potatoes. They grow in a vine but are rampant, heavy cropping (like a lot of water) and fairly hardy.... and fantastic when boiled/mashed/roasted/fried.

Green beans will grow, and you can get 3 crops off them if you plant early. Also onion, but not near the beans! bad underground JuJu happens. tomatoes and corn and beans all reciprocate well, plant your corn row north to south in the center so it shades the other plants equally, or you could have long stretchy plants. Climbing plants that require trellis are good for small gardens, pole beans, sweet peas, cucumbers, will all do well in a small garden with corn or the others i have mentioned.
