Is it possible to use pearl Barley to clear a pond of algea instead of Barley Straw?

Question:

Answers:
Nope. Pearl barley is a grain which would clog your pond up when it swells, Barley straw is a filter and you can easily remove it when it's done the job.

No, it's different stuff. You can buy liquid extract of Barley Straw that you can add, instead of some bundles of straw that you submerge. See the link here:

If you're in a different country, you should find a local stockist to you.

I find the extract effective, and certainly doesn't have the mess of adding physical straw. Heavy infestations should be cleared manually first and may require repeat manual and additive treatments.

Also aim to get your pond surface as covered as possible, say with water lillies, upto around 80%. Blanket Weed algae needs light and nutrients to grow - restrict either and you'll damage its chances.

Good luck! Rob
